Suspiria is a 1977 Italian supernatural horror film directed by Dario Argento and starring Jessica Harper as Suzy Bannion, an American ballet student who arrives at a prestigious dance academy in Freiburg, only to discover that something far darker lies behind its elegant façade. The film is one of the defining works of both Argento’s career and the giallo-horror tradition, though it moves beyond a conventional murder mystery into something more nightmarish and surreal. Much of its lasting power comes from its overwhelming style: the violent colour design, the dreamlike logic, the ornate sets and Goblin’s unnerving score all combine to make it feel less like a normal horror film than a fever dream.
Although the story is set in Freiburg, the film was made through a carefully layered mix of studio work and real locations in Germany and Italy. Most of the interiors were shot at De Paoli Studios in Rome, where the production also built major exterior elements, including the striking façade of the academy, which was modelled on the real Whale House in Freiburg. Additional location filming took place in Munich, where the airport arrival scene was shot at Munich-Riem Airport, Daniel’s death sequence was filmed at Königsplatz, and the consultation with Dr. Mandel was staged outside the BMW Headquarters building. That combination gives the film its peculiar and unsettling geographical feel: it is set in Freiburg, visually echoes a real building there, but is largely constructed through Rome studio artifice and selected Munich locations, making the whole world feel slightly displaced and unreal.
