Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Hollywood Forever Cemetery is a historic cemetery and cultural event venue located at 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1899 as Hollywood Cemetery, it developed alongside the emerging American film industry and became the burial place of numerous actors, directors, producers, musicians and other figures associated with Hollywood. Part of the original property was later sold for the expansion of the neighbouring Paramount Pictures studio. The cemetery was known for many years as Hollywood Memorial Park before being purchased, restored and renamed Hollywood Forever in 1998. Its grounds contain lawns, lakes, historic chapels, family monuments and several mausoleums, including the Hollywood Cathedral Mausoleum. The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 and also hosts concerts, cultural celebrations and outdoor film screenings.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery has appeared in The Player (1992), Charmed (1998–2006), The Prestige (2006), Dexter (2006–2013), 90210 (2008–2013), Valentine’s Day (2010), Under the Silver Lake (2018), Bosch: Legacy (2022–2025) and MaXXXine (2024). Its grounds and mausoleums have been used for funerals, criminal investigations and supernatural scenes, while several productions have incorporated the real outdoor film screenings held at the cemetery.

In The Player (1992), Hollywood Forever Cemetery is used for the funeral of screenwriter David Kahane. Studio executive Griffin Mill attends after having killed Kahane, mistakenly believing that he was responsible for sending a series of threatening postcards. Griffin meets Kahane’s girlfriend, June Gudmundsdottir, among the mourners and becomes increasingly drawn to her despite concealing his responsibility for the death. The funeral places Griffin directly among the people grieving for the man he murdered while he continues presenting himself as a concerned studio executive.

In Charmed (1998–2006), the Hollywood Cathedral Mausoleum appears during several supernatural and funeral sequences. In the season 3 episode “Death Takes a Halliwell”, Prue Halliwell enters the mausoleum with the Angel of Death and witnesses the murder of Inspector Reece Davidson, helping her understand that death cannot always be prevented. The same mausoleum is used prominently in the season 4 premiere, “Charmed Again, Part 1”, for Prue’s funeral following her death. Piper, Phoebe, Leo, Cole and their family gather for the ceremony, while Paige Matthews attends without yet knowing that she is their younger half-sister. Demonic bounty hunters later attack Cole inside the mausoleum, interrupting the mourners after the service.

In The Prestige (2006), Hollywood Forever Cemetery stands in for a Victorian London cemetery during the funeral of Julia McCullough. Julia has drowned while performing the water-tank escape in the stage act shared by Robert Angier and Alfred Borden. The funeral intensifies the conflict between the two magicians, as Angier holds Borden responsible for tying the knot that Julia was unable to escape. The cemetery provides the setting for the grief and resentment that transform their professional rivalry into an increasingly destructive obsession.

In Dexter (2006–2013), Hollywood Forever Cemetery represents several cemeteries supposedly located in Miami. In the season 3 episode “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, Dexter Morgan brings Miguel Prado to an empty grave and falsely claims that he buried Freebo there. Miguel later copies the idea by burying defence attorney Ellen Wolf in an open grave after murdering her. Dexter discovers her body in episode 9, “About Last Night”, secretly exhumes it and ensures that the police will find it. The cemetery returns in the season 5 premiere, “My Bad”, for Rita Morgan’s funeral, where Dexter arrives late and delivers a brief eulogy acknowledging that he loved her. The cemetery appears again as the fictional Briar Cemetery in the season 7 episode 3 “Buck the System” and episode 4 “Run”. Dexter Morgan follows suspected serial killer Ray Speltzer, who works at the cemetery as a groundskeeper, and watches him enter a private mausoleum. Dexter returns after dark, climbs over the cemetery fence and breaks into the mausoleum, where he discovers a ritualistic altar and an earring taken from one of Speltzer’s victims. The small Cutts mausoleum near the Cathedral Mausoleum was dressed for filming with the fictional name “Laurel”, while a bull’s head and flower pots were added around its entrance. The cemetery returns in the following episode when police investigate the mausoleum and Dexter continues tracking Speltzer. Although the story also connects Speltzer with a crematorium, that interior was recreated at the studio rather than filmed inside Hollywood Forever’s real crematorium.

In 90210 (2008–2013), Hollywood Forever Cemetery appears as itself in the season 1 episode “Hollywood Forever”. Silver celebrates her half-birthday by taking Dixon and their friends to an outdoor screening of Psycho on the cemetery’s Fairbanks Lawn. Dixon initially dislikes horror films but attends because the evening is important to Silver. Annie and Ethan also watch the film together while struggling with the electronic baby assigned to them for a school project. The episode incorporates the cemetery’s real tradition of outdoor film screenings and also shows Silver and Dixon beside the memorial to Johnny Ramone.

In Valentine’s Day (2010), Hollywood Forever Cemetery appears during an outdoor screening of Hot Spell. Jason is left with two tickets after his planned evening with Liz falls apart and gives one of them to Edgar. Edgar attends the screening with his wife, Estelle, whose younger self appears in the projected film through footage of Shirley MacLaine in Hot Spell. The cemetery screening becomes the setting for Edgar and Estelle’s reconciliation after a revelation from their marriage has created tension between them.

In Under the Silver Lake (2018), Hollywood Forever Cemetery appears as itself while Sam follows a series of coded clues through Los Angeles in search of the missing Sarah. He enters the cemetery while an outdoor film screening is taking place among the graves. The Hollywood Cathedral Mausoleum is then used for a secret performance by the band Jesus and the Brides of Dracula, which Sam attends after receiving an unusual edible ticket. The real screenings, mausoleum and celebrity graves contribute to the film’s portrayal of Hollywood as a place where popular culture, death and hidden conspiracies overlap.

In Bosch: Legacy (2022–2025), Hollywood Forever Cemetery appears in the season 2 episode “Hollywood Forever”. Harry Bosch and Honey Chandler investigate a motel beside the cemetery while attempting to prove that David Foster could not have committed the murder of Lexi Parks. They realise that the cemetery’s security cameras overlook the motel entrance and pay a security guard for access to the footage. The recording shows a van matching Foster’s vehicle arriving and leaving at times consistent with his alibi, although Chandler warns that unofficially obtained footage may be difficult to use in court.

In MaXXXine (2024), Hollywood Forever Cemetery is used when detectives Williams and Torres discover two mutilated bodies beside the cemetery’s pond. The victims are among the young women murdered as fear surrounding the Night Stalker spreads through Los Angeles in 1985. The detectives examine the bodies and the surrounding crime scene while attempting to determine whether the killings are connected to the real serial murderer or to another killer targeting people associated with Maxine Minx.
