The Ohio State Reformatory

The Ohio State Reformatory is a historic former prison located at 100 Reformatory Road in Mansfield, Ohio. Designed by Cleveland architect Levi T. Scofield, the limestone building combines castle-like towers and monumental institutional architecture intended to appear uplifting, imposing and intimidating. Construction began in 1886, and the first prisoners arrived in 1896. Originally established as an intermediate institution for young offenders, the reformatory emphasised education, religion and vocational training before gradually becoming a maximum-security prison. It closed in 1990 and is now preserved as a museum and visitor attraction by the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society.

The Ohio State Reformatory has appeared in Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976), Tango & Cash (1989), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Air Force One (1997), Escape Plan: The Extractors (2019) and Judas and the Black Messiah (2021). Its cell blocks, prison yard, administrative rooms and monumental exterior have allowed it to represent several fictional prisons in different countries and historical periods.

In Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976), the Ohio State Reformatory appears as the prison where unsuccessful vaudeville performers Harry Dighby and Walter Hill are incarcerated after Harry is caught stealing from the audience. Inside, they meet wealthy bank robber Adam Worth, who lives comfortably after bribing the prison authorities. After accidentally destroying Worth’s plans for robbing the Lowell Bank and Trust, Harry and Walter are assigned to a dangerous nitroglycerine work detail. They use the explosives to blast through the prison wall and escape. The prisoners’ arrival, the prison yard, interior material and the escape were filmed at the reformatory while it was still operating.

In Tango & Cash (1989), the Ohio State Reformatory is used for the prison where Los Angeles detectives Ray Tango and Gabriel Cash are sent after being framed for murder. The institution is filled with criminals previously arrested by the two detectives, leaving them exposed to attacks organised by crime boss Yves Perret. The reformatory’s corridors and prison areas appear during their incarceration, while its exterior and grounds are used during their rain-soaked escape. Filming took place while the prison remained operational, with guards working as extras and artificial rain created for the escape sequence.

In The Shawshank Redemption (1994), the Ohio State Reformatory appears as Shawshank State Prison, where banker Andy Dufresne is sentenced to life imprisonment for the murders of his wife and her lover. The building provides the central visual identity of the prison through its exterior, administration areas, prison yard and imposing stone architecture. The real warden’s office was used for scenes involving Warden Samuel Norton, while former officers’ quarters were transformed into the room occupied by Brooks after his release. The large cell block containing Andy and Red’s cells was constructed separately inside a former factory, so not every interior prison scene was filmed at the reformatory.

In Air Force One (1997), the Ohio State Reformatory appears as the Russian prison holding General Ivan Radek, the deposed dictator of Kazakhstan. After terrorists seize the American president’s aircraft, they demand Radek’s release in exchange for the hostages. Radek is escorted through the prison and towards the exterior gate as the Russian government prepares to free him. When President James Marshall regains control of the aircraft, the release is cancelled and Radek is shot by the guards before he can escape. The exterior gates, East Cell Block and Central Guard Room are visible during the sequence, while the large entrance gate was constructed specifically for the production.

In Escape Plan: The Extractors (2019), the Ohio State Reformatory appears as Devil’s Station, an isolated prison compound in Latvia. Lester Clark Jr uses the abandoned institution as a private black site after abducting Daya Zhang and Ray Breslin’s partner Abigail Ross. Breslin, Trent DeRosa, Shen Lo and Bao Yung travel to the prison and infiltrate the compound to rescue the captives. The cell blocks, corridors, walls and deteriorating interiors are used throughout the hostage scenes and the final assault on Devil’s Station.

In Judas and the Black Messiah (2021), the Ohio State Reformatory stands in for Menard Correctional Center in Illinois, where Black Panther leader Fred Hampton is imprisoned. The production used the solitary-confinement area, the West Cell Block and a prison dining area for scenes showing Hampton’s time inside the institution. The reformatory also appears when Hampton is released and returns to the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, unaware that FBI informant William O’Neal has continued reporting on him.
