Twin Peaks (1990–1991) is an American mystery drama series created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The series begins with the discovery of high school student Laura Palmer’s body in the fictional town of Twin Peaks, Washington, and follows FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper as he investigates the murder. What first appears to be a small-town crime story gradually opens into a stranger world of secrets, dreams, doubles, corruption and supernatural forces. With Kyle MacLachlan as Cooper and an ensemble cast including Sheryl Lee, Michael Ontkean, Mädchen Amick, Lara Flynn Boyle, Dana Ashbrook, Sherilyn Fenn, Ray Wise, Peggy Lipton and many others, Twin Peaks became one of the most influential television series of its era. Its mixture of murder mystery, melodrama, surrealism, horror, comedy and small-town Americana helped change expectations of what television drama could be.
Twin Peaks was filmed mainly in Washington State, especially around Snoqualmie, North Bend and Fall City, east of Seattle. These real Pacific Northwest towns gave the fictional Twin Peaks much of its identity: misty forests, mountain roads, waterfalls, timber-town streets, diners, lodges and isolated bridges. Snoqualmie Falls and the Salish Lodge & Spa appear in the opening credits and are closely connected to the Great Northern Hotel, while Twede’s Cafe in North Bend became the Double R Diner, the home of cherry pie and “damn fine coffee.” The former Weyerhaeuser office site in Snoqualmie, now associated with DirtFish, was used as the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Department, and Reinig Bridge is remembered as the bridge where Ronette Pulaski is found walking in a traumatised state. Fall City Roadhouse was used for the Roadhouse, while Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo was used for key Blue Pine Lodge material and the discovery of Laura Palmer’s body. Although interiors and later material also involved studio work and other locations, the Washington locations remain central to the series’ atmosphere. They make Twin Peaks feel like a place caught between the ordinary and the uncanny, where cafés, hotels, forests, waterfalls and roadside landmarks all become part of the mystery.
