The Other Guys (2010) is an American action comedy directed by Adam McKay, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as Allen Gamble and Terry Hoitz, two mismatched NYPD detectives stuck in the shadow of the cityโs celebrated action-hero cops. The film plays as a parody of the buddy-cop genre, replacing the usual hard-boiled police mythology with bureaucratic failure, absurd workplace comedy and increasingly chaotic action scenes. Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson appear as the over-the-top star detectives whose reckless heroics set the tone for the film, while Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan and Ray Stevenson fill out the supporting cast. Beneath the broad comedy, The Other Guys also uses a financial-crime plot and end-credit statistics to give the film a satirical edge aimed at corporate fraud and Wall Street culture.
The Other Guys is strongly tied to New York City, and the film uses a wide range of real locations across Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs to ground its comedy in a recognisable urban setting. Several scenes were filmed in Midtown and Lower Manhattan, including areas around Madison Avenue, Broadway, Park Avenue, Chinatown, Columbus Circle and the Financial District. The Plaza Hotel, Time Warner Center, Madison Square Garden, Grand Central area, Peter McManus Cafe and Top of the Rock are among the identifiable New York locations connected to the film. Coney Island also appears through Nathanโs Famous, while additional New York filming took place outside central Manhattan, including Staten Island and Hartsdale. The result is a film that uses New York less as a polished postcard backdrop and more as a constantly shifting playground for car chases, police bureaucracy, corporate offices, street scenes and absurd comic escalation.
