Williamsburg Bridge is one of New York Cityโ€™s major East River bridges, connecting the Lower East Side of Manhattan with Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Opened in 1903, the bridge carries road traffic, subway trains, cyclists and pedestrians, and its steel structure has made it one of the most recognisable visual markers between Manhattan and Brooklyn. In film, the bridge is often used to establish an older, grittier New York atmosphere, especially around the Lower East Side, Williamsburg and the streets close to the East River.

The bridge and the streets around it have appeared in several New York films, including “The Naked City” (1948), “Serpico” (1973), “The French Connection” (1971) and “Once Upon a Time in America” (1984). It also appears in more modern productions such as “The Amazing Spider-Man” (2012) and “Kick-Ass 2” (2013), but its strongest screen identity is tied to older crime films and period New York stories.

In “The Naked City” (1948), Williamsburg Bridge is part of the filmโ€™s real New York texture. The film was shot extensively on location, and the bridge appears in connection with the Lower East Side and East River waterfront. Its presence helps give the film its documentary-like quality, placing the murder investigation within a recognisable post-war New York landscape rather than a studio-built version of the city.

In “The French Connection” (1971), Williamsburg Bridge is not the site of the famous car chase, which was filmed beneath the elevated subway in Brooklyn. However, the bridge is visible in the background during the surveillance scenes around the Lower East Side, including shots looking down the street toward the bridge. It helps ground the filmโ€™s New York geography and adds to the cold, urban realism of Popeye Doyleโ€™s investigation.

In “Serpico” (1973), Williamsburg Bridge appears as part of the filmโ€™s New York location work. The bridge fits the filmโ€™s restless movement through different boroughs and neighbourhoods, reflecting Frank Serpicoโ€™s changing relationship with the city around him. Like much of the film, the bridge is used less as a postcard landmark and more as part of the everyday urban environment of 1970s New York.

In “Once Upon a Time in America” (1984), the Williamsburg Bridge becomes one of the filmโ€™s defining visual symbols. Sergio Leone uses the streets below and near the bridge to evoke the Jewish Lower East Side of the 1920s, even though some of these scenes were filmed on the Brooklyn side rather than in Manhattan. The bridge in the background gives the scenes an unmistakable New York identity and helps create the nostalgic, mythic atmosphere of Noodles and Maxโ€™s childhood world.
