Johnny English is a 2003 spy action comedy directed by Peter Howitt and starring Rowan Atkinson as Britainโ€™s most overconfident and least competent secret agent. After a disastrous accident wipes out the countryโ€™s top agents, Johnny English becomes the last man available to stop the theft of the Crown Jewels and uncover the plans of French prison magnate Pascal Sauvage. The film works as both a parody and an affectionate send-up of the James Bond tradition, mixing spy-thriller structure with Atkinsonโ€™s physical comedy, absurd misunderstandings and a deliberately ridiculous version of British intelligence work.

The film was shot mainly in England, especially London, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, with additional work in Kent, Cornwall and the south of France. London locations include Freemasonsโ€™ Hall as MI7 headquarters, Brompton Cemetery for the funeral mix-up, Canary Wharf for the filmโ€™s modern corporate imagery, and street locations around Leadenhall Market and Smithfield. St Albans Cathedral stands in for Westminster Abbey during the coronation sequence, while Mentmore Towers in Buckinghamshire appears in the dream-like opening. The journey to France uses Dover and its ferry terminal, before the film shifts to the French Riviera for the finale, with St Michaelโ€™s Mount in Cornwall used as the exterior of Sauvageโ€™s French chรขteau. Together, these locations give Johnny English a deliberately heightened version of Britain and Europe, moving from state buildings, churches and spy headquarters to ferry ports, coastal roads and villainous grand estates.
