Høysommer is a 1958 Norwegian drama directed by Arild Brinchmann and based on Cora Sandel’s short story “Nina.” The film follows Nina, a wealthy woman who drifts out on the fjord intending to end her life, only to be carried to a remote island where she is found by Rasmus, a former painter now living in isolation as a lighthouse keeper. What begins as rescue gradually develops into an intense and fragile love story, shaped by emotional instability, class difference and the tension between freedom and dependency. The film is often regarded as one of the more enduring Norwegian films of the 1950s.

The film’s most important setting is the isolated lighthouse environment, and Høysommer was filmed at Svenner Lighthouse in the Svenner archipelago off the coast near Stavern in Vestfold. The location lies several kilometres out from the mainland at the entrance to Larviksfjorden, which gives the film exactly the exposed, sea-bound atmosphere the story needs. Rather than using a generic coastal backdrop, the production places its characters in a real lighthouse landscape of rock, open water and isolation, making the setting feel central to the drama rather than decorative.
