Burt Reynolds (11 February 1936 โ€“ 6 September 2018) was an American actor, director, and producer who became one of the biggest movie stars of the 1970s and an enduring icon of American popular culture. After early work in television and supporting film roles, he broke through as a charismatic leading man with hard-edged thrillers and action films, and soon developed a star image built on charm, humour, and a distinctly Southern swagger. For much of the decade he was among the highest-grossing actors in Hollywood, with films that blended action and comedy in a way that suited his relaxed, confident screen persona.

Reynolds is best remembered for hits such as Deliverance (1972), The Longest Yard (1974), Smokey and the Bandit (1977) and its sequels, and The Cannonball Run (1981), all of which helped define an era of mainstream entertainment cinema. Later in his career he earned renewed critical acclaim with Boogie Nights (1997), which brought him a Golden Globe win and an Academy Award nomination and highlighted his depth as a dramatic actor. Alongside acting, he directed and produced projects and remained a familiar public figure for decades, remembered for both his massive box-office impact and his late-career renaissance.
