The Weekend Away is a 2022 thriller directed by Kim Farrant and based on Sarah Aldersonโs novel of the same name. The film follows Beth, played by Leighton Meester, who travels to Croatia for a short break with her friend Kate, only for the trip to spiral into panic and suspicion when Kate disappears after a night out. What begins as a glamorous escape quickly turns into a tense mystery involving unreliable witnesses, hidden relationships and a growing sense that Beth cannot trust anyone around her. The film is built less as an action thriller than as a fast-moving suspense story driven by paranoia, grief and sudden reversals.
The film was shot in Croatia, with Split as its principal location and the most important part of its visual identity. The waterfront Riva promenade, Peristyle Square, the cellars of Diocletianโs Palace and the area around the Gregory of Nin statue all appear in the film, giving it a setting built from seafront promenades, Roman stone architecture, narrow old-town passages and busy public squares. Additional filming also took place in Zagreb and Dubrovnik, but Split is the place that dominates the filmโs atmosphere and gives the story its mix of holiday beauty and growing unease. Rather than using a generic Mediterranean backdrop, the film anchors its suspense in a very recognisable Croatian urban landscape of historic stone streets, open plazas and waterfront nightlife.

Diocletian’s Palace
Diocletianโs Palace has been used in several productions, most famously "Game of Thrones" (2011โ2019) and the Netflix thriller "The Weekend Away" (2022).
