Beverly Hills Cop is a 1984 American action comedy directed by Martin Brest and starring Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, a fast-talking Detroit detective who heads to Beverly Hills after the murder of his friend Mikey Tandino. What makes the film work so well is the contrast between Axelโs chaotic, improvisational style and the polished, rule-bound world he enters in southern California. The film helped turn Murphy into an international star and became one of the defining action comedies of the 1980s, combining police thriller elements with sharp humour and a strong fish-out-of-water setup.
The film was shot partly in Michigan but mostly in and around Los Angeles, with that geographical split reflecting the story itself. The opening Detroit material was filmed in Detroit and nearby Wayne, giving the beginning a rougher industrial feel, while the Beverly Hills and wider Los Angeles sections were created through a mix of real Beverly Hills locations and stand-ins elsewhere in southern California. Because Beverly Hills restricted late-night filming, some scenes set there were actually shot in Pasadena, while other major locations included downtown Los Angeles, Westlake and Santa Monica. Among the more recognisable sites are the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles as the โBeverly Palms Hotel,โ Axelโs apartment building in Westlake, and the Maitlandsโ mansion exterior in Santa Monica. The result is a film that contrasts Detroit grit with upscale California glamour, even though much of that glamorous world was built just outside Beverly Hills itself.

Beverly Hills City Hall
Beverly Hills City Hall in Beverly Hills was used in the "Beverly Hills Cop" films, where it appears as part of the Beverly Hills Police Department.
