Mr. Robot (2015–2019) is an American psychological techno-thriller series created by Sam Esmail. The series follows Elliot Alderson, a brilliant but isolated cybersecurity engineer and hacker living in New York City. Elliot is drawn into fsociety, an underground hacker group led by the mysterious Mr. Robot, and becomes involved in a plan to attack the global financial system through the powerful corporation E Corp. Rami Malek stars as Elliot, with Christian Slater as Mr. Robot, Carly Chaikin as Darlene, Portia Doubleday as Angela Moss, Martin Wallström as Tyrell Wellick and Michael Cristofer as Phillip Price. The series combines cybercrime, corporate conspiracy, mental illness, political paranoia and anti-capitalist revolt, with a visual style that often frames characters as small, isolated figures inside cold city spaces. Mr. Robot became one of the defining television dramas of the 2010s, known for its technical attention to hacking culture, unreliable narration, bleak atmosphere and strong use of New York as both setting and psychological landscape.

Mr. Robot was filmed mainly in New York City, where the streets, offices, subway stations, arcades and corporate buildings form a major part of the series’ identity. Coney Island is one of the show’s most important locations, with Eldorado Bumper Cars & Arcade used for the exterior of the abandoned Fun Society arcade, fsociety’s base of operations. The series also used Silvercup Studios and Broadway Stages for studio work, while locations across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens helped build Elliot’s world of apartments, coffee shops, anonymous streets, subway platforms and corporate towers. E Corp’s world is tied to Midtown and Manhattan office architecture, including locations such as 135 East 57th Street for Evil Corp exteriors and 246 Spring Street for interiors. The series also uses Times Square, Grand Central, Queens Museum, Coney Island Boardwalk, Church Avenue Station and other recognisable New York locations, often presenting the city as alienating rather than glamorous. Some material was filmed outside New York, including Arizona locations such as Phoenix and the Sonoran Desert, but Mr. Robot remains visually rooted in New York. The show’s location identity comes from the contrast between public and private spaces: crowded streets, glass corporate buildings, old arcades, anonymous apartments, subway stations, coffee shops and industrial corners all become part of Elliot’s fractured view of the city and the system he wants to break.
