Miami Rhapsody is a 1995 romantic comedy written and directed by David Frankel, with Sarah Jessica Parker starring as Gwyn Marcus, a young Miami woman whose engagement forces her to look more closely at the messy romantic lives of her family. Around her, almost everyone seems to be involved in affairs, doubts or emotional detours, including her parents, siblings and future in-laws. The film has often been compared to Woody Allen-style relationship comedy, but it gives that neurotic ensemble structure a distinctly South Florida setting, built around marriage anxiety, family chaos, infidelity and the fear that love may be far less stable than Gwyn wants it to be.
The film was shot in Miami and Miami Beach, and the city is central to its identity. Locations include Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, Lincoln Road Mall, Bal Harbour Shops, Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, Ayestaran Restaurant on Southwest 27th Avenue, and the Sinbad Motel on Biscayne Boulevard. These places give the film a glossy but lived-in Miami atmosphere, moving between Art Deco streets, upscale shopping, waterfront elegance, Cuban restaurant culture and roadside motel spaces. Rather than treating Miami only as a sunny postcard backdrop, Miami Rhapsody uses the cityโs colour, heat and social energy to frame a story about romantic confusion, family pressure and the uncomfortable gap between fantasy and adult relationships.
