The Naked City is a 1948 American crime procedural directed by Jules Dassin and produced by Mark Hellinger, who also provides the filmโ€™s famous documentary-style narration. The story begins with the murder of a young model in New York City and follows the police investigation as detectives trace witnesses, suspects and small details across the city. Rather than presenting the case as a glamorous murder mystery, the film gives it a grounded, procedural rhythm, showing the slow accumulation of police work in offices, apartments, streets and public spaces. Its semi-documentary style, location photography and interest in everyday New York life made it one of the key American crime films of the late 1940s and an important forerunner to later police procedurals.

The film was shot almost entirely on location in New York City, which is central to its identity. Instead of building a stylised studio version of the city, The Naked City moves through real streets, bridges, apartments, shops, offices, waterfront areas and crowded neighbourhoods, giving the investigation a strong sense of urban realism. Manhattan is especially important, but the filmโ€™s geography expands through the city as the police follow leads and close in on the killer. The climax takes place around the Williamsburg Bridge, where Garzah is bitten by a guide dog and shoots it, allowing the police to track him by the sound of gunfire. The chase then moves into one of the bridge towers, where Garzah fires at the pursuing officers before they return fire and kill him. By ending the film on one of New Yorkโ€™s great pieces of urban infrastructure, The Naked City turns the city itself into more than a backdrop; it becomes the living system through which the crime is discovered, pursued and finally resolved.
