Bullitt

Bullitt is a 1968 American crime thriller directed by Peter Yates and starring Steve McQueen as Frank Bullitt, a San Francisco police lieutenant assigned to protect a mob witness before a high-profile Senate hearing. When the assignment goes wrong, Bullitt is forced to uncover what really happened while navigating political pressure, professional suspicion and the city’s criminal underworld. The film is famous for its cool, restrained style, Lalo Schifrin’s jazz-influenced score, McQueen’s understated performance and, above all, its groundbreaking car chase, which became one of the most influential action sequences in cinema history.

The film was shot largely on location in San Francisco, and the city is central to its realism and identity. Locations include the Mark Hopkins Hotel on Nob Hill, Bullitt’s apartment on Taylor Street, Grace Cathedral, San Francisco General Hospital, Enrico’s on Broadway, the Hall of Justice at 850 Bryant Street, and San Francisco International Airport. The famous chase between Bullitt’s Ford Mustang and the hitmen’s Dodge Charger was built from several San Francisco and Bay Area locations edited together into one relentless sequence, moving through areas such as Russian Hill, North Beach, the Marina, McLaren Park, Daly City and the Guadalupe Canyon Parkway near Brisbane. Rather than using San Francisco only for scenic views, Bullitt turns the city’s steep streets, sharp corners, hotels, hospitals, official buildings and outer industrial roads into the physical engine of the film.
